SGLI covers active-duty sailors up to $500,000 for ~$30/month. When you leave service, you have 120 days to convert to VGLI or get civilian coverage. Missing this window may require a medical exam.
What Is SGLI?
Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a low-cost group life insurance program for active-duty military members, including all Navy sailors. It is administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through Prudential Financial.
SGLI is automatic - every new sailor is enrolled at the maximum coverage amount unless they specifically elect less. Coverage begins on the first day of active duty.
SGLI Coverage Limits and Cost
| Coverage Amount | Monthly Premium | TSGLI Rider | Total Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500,000 (maximum) | $30.00 | $1.00 | $31.00 |
| $400,000 | $24.00 | $1.00 | $25.00 |
| $300,000 | $18.00 | $1.00 | $19.00 |
| $200,000 | $12.00 | $1.00 | $13.00 |
| $100,000 | $6.00 | $1.00 | $7.00 |
TSGLI (Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance) provides up to $100,000 for severe traumatic injuries. It cannot be declined separately from SGLI.
What Happens When You Separate?
SGLI coverage ends 120 days after separation from active duty. You have two primary options:
- Convert to VGLI: Within 120 days, no medical exam required. Within 240 days, a health assessment is required. After 240 days, you must prove insurability.
- Get civilian coverage: Shop term or whole life from private insurers. Often cheaper than VGLI for younger veterans, especially for coverage below $500,000.
Top Civilian Supplements for Active-Duty Sailors
Many sailors use SGLI as a base and supplement with civilian term life insurance - especially if they have a mortgage, dependents, or income that exceeds SGLI's $500,000 cap.
- USAA Life Insurance: Military-exclusive, covers combat and deployment, can be kept after separation
- AAFMAA: Armed Forces Benefit Association - nonprofit, military-focused, competitive rates for officers
- Policygenius: Comparison marketplace - good for finding civilian term rates after comparing military options

Frequently Asked Questions
SGLI costs $0.06 per $1,000 of coverage per month, regardless of age or health. Maximum coverage of $500,000 costs $30/month plus $1/month for the TSGLI rider - $31 total. This rate applies to all sailors equally, making it one of the best-value life insurance products available.
SGLI coverage ends when you leave active duty. You have 120 days to convert to VGLI without a medical exam. After 240 days, you must provide evidence of insurability. Missing this window is one of the most common and costly mistakes separating sailors make.
FSGLI covers your spouse up to $100,000 (cannot exceed servicemember's SGLI amount) and each dependent child up to $10,000 at no charge. Spouse coverage costs $5-$55/month based on age. You must be enrolled in SGLI to enroll your family in FSGLI.
For junior enlisted sailors without significant assets or dependents, SGLI's $500,000 may be sufficient. For sailors with mortgages, children, or income above $50,000/year, a civilian supplement is often recommended. The key question: would $500,000 replace 10 years of your income?
SGLI provides full coverage during combat deployments, including in designated combat zones. There is no exclusion for hazardous duty or combat - this is one of SGLI's key advantages over most civilian policies. Coverage continues automatically during deployment.
